How to set up DigiD in the Netherlands (2026)
DigiD is the Dutch digital identity system. It is your login key to all Dutch government services: filing tax returns, applying for benefits like zorgtoeslag, checking your pension and managing your health insurance. You need a BSN and a Dutch address to apply. The full process takes about 1-2 weeks because the activation code is sent by physical mail.
Step-by-step process
Check requirements
You need a BSN (Burgerservicenummer) and a registered Dutch address. If you do not have a BSN yet, register at your gemeente first. DigiD cannot be requested without these.
Apply at digid.nl
Go to digid.nl and click 'DigiD aanvragen'. Fill in your BSN, date of birth and postcode. Choose a username and password. The system will send an activation letter to your registered Dutch address.
Wait for the activation letter
The letter arrives within 5 business days at your Dutch address. It contains a unique activation code. If it does not arrive within 10 days, you can request a new one at digid.nl.
Activate your DigiD
Go to digid.nl, click 'DigiD activeren' and enter your activation code along with your username and password. Your DigiD is now active at the basic level.
Install the DigiD app (recommended)
Download the DigiD app from the App Store or Google Play. Open the app and follow the setup. The app enables higher security levels (SMS verification and ID check) which are required for some government services.
