What is the BSN?

The BSN (Burgerservicenummer) is a unique 9-digit identification number assigned to everyone registered in the Netherlands.

You need a BSN to:

Open a Dutch bank account
Apply for zorgtoeslag (up to 123 euros/month)
File a Dutch tax return
Sign an employment contract

Who needs to register?

Gemeente registration: If staying 4+ months with a fixed address, register at your local gemeente.

RNI registration: If staying less than 4 months or without a fixed address, register at one of the 19 RNI municipalities β€” you get your BSN the same day.
