What is zorgtoeslag?

Zorgtoeslag is a monthly payment from the Dutch government to help residents cover mandatory health insurance costs. In 2026, the maximum is 123 euros/month for singles and 239 euros/month for couples.

That is up to 1,476 euros/year that most expats are entitled to but never claim.

Do I qualify?

You qualify if:

You live in the Netherlands
You have Dutch health insurance (basisverzekering)
You have a BSN
Annual income below ~38,000 euros (single)
You are 18+

Can I apply retroactively?

For a new application: backdate up to 3 months. For corrections to previous years: up to 5 years back.
